Makassad Hospital is the largest in the west Bank in terms of beds and medical specialties. It is not only a curative hospital with secondary and tertiary facilities, but also a main venue for training for medical students, nursing students and post-graduate doctors. The 4-year post-graduate residency program is fully accredited by both Jordan and Palestinian Medical Councils and caters for around 70 doctors annually training in the the different medical specialties. The cost of this program is estimated at $1 million annually.

The main medical departments in the hospital are:

  • general surgery
  • pediatrics
  • obstetrics & gynecology
  • internal medicine
  • orthopedics surgery
  • pathology
  • neonatal unit &NICU
  • radiology
  • special surgery:
    • urology
    • neurosurgery
    • maxillofacial surgery

The hospital faces major medical problems including:

  1. Large financial deficit mainly due to subsidizing the treatment of patients
  2. The Israeli policy of closing East Jerusalem which hinders access by workers and patients from the West Bank
  3. Loss of support from the Arab World after the Gulf War in 1991 (with the exception of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.)

The hospital's future plans include:

  • Renovation of the hospital's building and equipment
  • Modernization of cardiac catheterization laboratory
  • Modernization of operating rooms
  • Modernization of the central sterile supply department
  • Modernization and provision of furniture for the newly renovated obstetrics & gynecology department
  • Strengthening of the residency training department
  • Modernization of the coronary care unit (CCU)
  • Provision of new central computer and M.I.S. for the hospital
  • Modernization of the neonatal unit and pediatric ICU
